Amylase is an enzyme produced by the pancreas. It help digest carbohydrates.
This test is primarily ordered to diagnose and monitor acute pancreatitis and sometimes other pancreatic diseases.
Amylase tests are also used to monitor the treatment of cancers involving the pancreas and after the removal of gallstones that have caused gallbladder attacks.
