Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. This test measures the amount of prolactin in the blood. Normally present in low amounts in men and nonpregnant women, the primary rold of prolactin is to promote lactation (breast milk production).
Prolactin levels may be ordered, along with other hormone levels such as growth hormone, when a health practitioner suspects that a person has a pituitary disorder such as hypopituitarism.
